Many comic artists/mangaka worldwide have tackled setting the Word to sequential imagery over the years. Project Testament differs from most of these by quoting the Word verbatim. Most comic projects could not feasibly do this, as only a small handful of artists worked on trying to cover the entire Bible - or at least the New Testament. Project Testament invites as many artists as have the passion and skill for it.
This project also differs in that it is available completely free via the internet. It is our hope that people of all kinds will enjoy and 'get something' from this project - whether Christian or just interested in reading what this "Holy Word" is about. In a sequential art format, not only does the reading feel more 'like fun' to most, but it also helps the reader keep track of the many specific figures in each book as the mind can relate the names to the visuals provided. As this is a main concern in the design of this project, the focus of the character design is not to be historically accurate, but rather, to be memorable and bring out the feel of the character's personality in as many cases as is applicable.
Note though that since this version is verbatim, certain books (for instance, epistles/letters or psalms/songs) may feel more traditionally-illustrated than sequential at times.
Also, there is no set 'style' to strive for. As long as an artist produces professional-quality work, they are welcome to work in almost any look, whether more towards traditional American comic, Japanese manga, Disney-esque, their own style, or what have you. (For more information, refer to the 'Submissions' section below.)
That said, we sincerely hope you enjoy Project Testament.
In submitting, we ask that you keep to the following:
- Artists may work on a book alone or in a small group, but we ask that the artist/s stay with the project and the character designs and professional quality stay consistent within any given book. We understand that if a book has a couple of different pencillers and/or inkers and colorists that the style may change a little, but that can be alright so long as the characters can still be easily identified within the book.
- Finished work may be in color or screentoned. Plain pencil comics and 'raw' inks are not acceptable. If you can not color or ink/tone, try searching on sites like DeviantArt and Digital Webbing for partners who'll work with you.
- Keep in mind, this takes time - be ready for the committment. We are only asking for one page per month minimum rate, but desire at least one page every one or two weeks. You can work ahead if you know you'll be away/busy for a certain length of time. We are understanding for the mostpart as long as you do your best to keep to the schedule and keep in contact with us about any changes in plan. If you would like to work faster than this, that is wonderful, provided quality is not sacrificed in the process.
- As mentioned before, the Word must be quoted verbatim in your Book - you must not add, subtract, or paraphrase any text. Adding some sound effects can be alright though if that is your style. We are using the New King James Version for this project. If someone at some point would like to go through all of the pages and make a KJV version or what have you, they are welcome to, but we ask that artists submit their original pages in NKJV. (Also, be sure to include the required copyright notice for NKJV. See the example at the beginning of John if you do not know how to do this.)
- Though style is open as aforementioned, technical skill is not. (An example of minimum-quality acceptable can be found in the first six pages of John currently available.) If an artist submits work that does not keep up with the professional quality of the rest of the project, we reserve the right to turn that artist down for the time being. Said artist would be welcome to work on their skill and submit again though, of course. (And please do not be discouraged if we ask you to 'work on it' or such. This project is more for the audience than the artist, and as such, we are trying to maintain a certain level of quality throughout. Still, I know of artists who have been told to 'work on it' and come out much better later on, so never, -ever- feel discouraged about your art, ok? Keep trying, and you'll get there. All it takes is to try hard, and never give up!)
In your submission, please include:
- Name of Artist/s desiring to work on a given book.
- Email Address/es of said Artist/s.
- Name of Book to be Worked On. (As you can see from the list at left, we are hoping to complete the New Testament first, but if you are very passionate about delving into a certain Old Testament book, feel free to note this and explain why.)
- DeviantArt Account (preferred) or Other Art Website of said Artist/s so we can see your current skill level. (It's helpful if you atleast have 3-5 completed sequential pages to show us.)
- A Sample Finished Page of the Desired Book. Show us what you can (and will) do! The page size we're using is 663px wide by as close to 1025px tall as possible so it remains proportional with a standard comic page. (This applies even if you are working in a more manga style so we can keep the format consistent.) For the website we post 100dpi only, but it's highly recommended you work at and keep your original files at 300dpi. (If your submission is accepted and you do not quite understand all of the technical whatnot listed above, let us know, we'll help you figure it out.)
That's all it takes to start.. We'll review your work and get back to you as soon as possible from there. If you have not heard from us, either by email or DeviantArt note, within a week, please resubmit your work as it may have been lost in the spam shuffle or such.
Please send all submissions either by email to shadesofcerulean (at) gmail [dot] com or via DeviantArt note to shadesofcerulean.Thank you for considering joining us!
As previously stated, Project Testament is intended to always be available online - completely free. If any publisher, given this condition, is still interested in publishing any given book and/or books, please contact the artist/s involved in said book/s directly to work out the details of the arrangement. Ownership remains with the artist/s, though by submitting, they give us permission to post their works here, collect them on DeviantArt, etc, so long as proper credit is always given. (Which it, of course, always will be. We love our artists.)
